// The opencast pit Hambach in Elsdorf in the Rhine area of North Rhine-Westphalia. The area is run by RWE Power AG: It is primarily used for excavating brown and soft coal. The area includes the county district Niederzier, Kreis Dueren and Elsdorf. The pit and mine is often reason for the relocation of villages. Parts of the largest wooded area of the state were destroyed and old settlements such as Manheim or Etzweiler had to be relocated.
